Invitational Seminar
Preparing Teachers to Teach in the 21st Century

May 9, 2008
New York, New York

This seminar was the first in a series of seminars taking an "out of the box" look at the way we prepare teachers for the challenges of teaching in the 21st Century. These seminars encourage teacher preparation programs to take a hard look at how they function and what they do, in light of the challenges posed by 21st century students and teachers. The initial seminar facilitated meaningful interaction among City University of New York deans and professors and key staff from the New York State Education Department, the New York City Department of Education, and the Mayor's Office around key challenges in teacher preparation. With the help of discussion leaders, Daniel Fallon (Director of Higher Education Programs at Carnegie Corporation) and Albert Bennett (Harold Washington Professor of Sociology and Education at Roosevelt University), participants explored challenges in teacher education and recommended actions to enhance the knowledge, skill, and dispositions of new teachers.
