P–16 Statewide Literacy Workgroup Adolescent Literacy: A Review of Reading Next and Writing Next
On October 10, 2007, the NYCC Adolescent Literacy Team held a one-day professional development seminar at the Cultural Education Center for approximately 30 members of the P–16 Statewide Literacy Workgroup. The P–16 Literacy Workgroup members are a cross-representation of NYSED departments, offices and professional organizations. After reviewing the current National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) data for New York students, the NYCC Adolescent Literacy Team presented an overview of the documents Reading Next and Writing Next. Workgroup members identified areas for further study and brainstormed ways to share information and work collaboratively across departments. The next meeting is scheduled for November 27, 2007.
The Workgroup is currently developing the New York State Framework for Literacy that will be used, once adopted, to inform the next generation of student learning standards (what student must know, understand, and be able to do regarding literacy), teacher standards (what teachers must know and be able to do to prepare students in literacy), and systems standards (what systems must do to support improved literacy achievement for all students in all classrooms).
