Comprehensive Assessments
The New York Comprehensive Center (NYCC) supports the development of comprehensive assessment systems in New York school districts. These assessment systems are designed to help all students attain the state's content standards. Specifically, the Center builds the capacity of the New York State Education Department (NYSED) to (a) understand the components and quality criteria of local comprehensive assessment systems and (b) facilitate the development and use of high quality assessments in local school districts.
To provide this support, the Comprehensive Assessment Initiative is designed to:
- disseminate research on the effective use of assessment results to modify instruction and learning strategies with the end goal of improving student attainment of state standards;
- disseminate evidence-based information about promising local assessment practices that promote the alignment of classroom instruction with state standards;
- create a research based framework to inform the development of state policies and procedures that will promote effective comprehensive assessments systems in New York school districts; and
- develop a model in the Syracuse City School District for enhancing local comprehensive assessment systems to include formative assessment practices aligned with state standards.
