Institutions of Higher Education/Teacher Quality

The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001 requires that all public school teachers of core academic subjects meet the highly qualified teacher requirements of their state. NCLB also requires state departments of education, institutions of higher education (IHEs), and districts to collaborate on a comprehensive system of support for all teachers. Furthermore, NCLB requires that states, schools, and school districts use scientifically based research (SBR) on effective practices to inform curricula, instruction, and assessment.

Objectives

To assist IHEs and the New York State Education Department (NYSED) in meeting these requirements, the objectives of the Institutions of Higher Education/Teacher Quality (IHE/TQ) initiative are to:

  1. Assist IHE faculty who educate teachers to stay knowledgeable about SBR and evidence-based practices and to incorporate them into teacher preparation courses
  2. Catalyze a network among IHE faculty who collaborate to share resources and adjust their instruction and materials recurrently in accordance with the best available research
  3. Strengthen teacher preparation programs by enhancing the connection and collaboration between NYSED and New York IHEs
  4. Work with NYSED to enhance collaborative interaction with selected local education agencies (LEAs)

The IHE/TQ team supports these objectives by convening symposia featuring national experts and seminars that allow the major education stakeholders in New York State—IHEs, NYSED and selected school districts—to collaboratively address common areas of concern.
