Initiatives
The New York Comprehensive Center’s (NYCC) work plan is developed in collaboration with the New York State Education Department (NYSED) and is organized around several initiatives that address issues of high priority to NYSED.
The Adolescent Literacy initiative engages educators in examining the research on this topic through symposia and on-going professional development. In addition, the initiative team develops research-based frameworks to guide policy that raises academic outcomes.
A common need across the state is for formative assessment systems, aligned to state standards, that give instructors timely feedback on student performance. NYCC presents educational leaders with information and conducts training about Comprehensive District and School Assessment Systems using scientifically based methods of assessing student academic performance and evaluating the effectiveness of instruction.
The eLearning initiative assists in defining the use of instructional technology and identifying the professional development needs of the state education department.
NYCC engages leaders from Institutions of Higher Education in action planning for teacher preparation programs. These plans incorporate the use of scientifically based research findings with a focus on early literacy.
The Mathematics initiative enhances the capacity of NYSED to provide strategic interventions for striving students and conducts professional development to affect improved student outcomes.
The NYCC supports Parent Involvement in the learning process by expanding parents' knowledge of their rights and choices under No Child Left Behind (NCLB) and providing them with access to resources.
Additionally, the Center builds the capacity of the state education department to provide and align a robust set of services through a Statewide System of Support.
